Napa Valley

Stretching 40 miles long and five miles wide, Napa Valley lies between the Vaca and Mayacamas mountain ranges. The valley benefits from cool afternoon winds and fog from San Pablo Bay, ensuring grapes ripen slowly and evenly. Soil diversity—from clay and gravel to volcanic—further contributes to the region’s distinctive wines, while a range of microclimates creates subtle variations in flavour from north to south.

The valley is divided into 14 recognised sub-AVAs, each with a unique personality. These include Atlas Peak, Howell Mountain, Oakville, Rutherford, Stag’s Leap District, and Yountville. Wines from these sub-regions must display both the Napa Valley and sub-AVA designation on their labels, except for Carneros, which spans Napa and Sonoma counties.

Cabernet Sauvignon dominates Napa’s vineyards, occupying over 45% of acreage, followed by Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Riesling, Zinfandel, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. Lesser-known varieties such as Sangiovese, Barbera, and Dolcetto contribute to the region’s breadth.
