While the estate dates back to at least 1837, Petrus rose to international prominence in the 20th century under the visionary leadership of Madame Loubat, who became the sole owner in 1945. Recognising its immense potential, she partnered with Jean-Pierre Moueix, who became the exclusive agent for the wine. Together with his sons, Jean-François and Christian, the Moueix family cemented Petrus’s modern legend. In 1969, the Moueix family acquired a majority stake in the estate. In 2018, their ownership expanded to include Alejandro Santo Domingo, who purchased a 20% share—underscoring Petrus’s global allure.
Petrus is perched atop the Pomerol plateau, on a rare geological feature known as the buttonhole of blue clay (smectite). This dense, moisture-retentive soil is a natural asset in Pomerol, where drought can affect vines during the growing season. It enables the estate to produce exceptional concentration, richness, and finesse Merlot. The vineyard is planted almost entirely to Merlot, a grape that thrives in these conditions and forms the backbone of Petrus’s singular style: plush, structured, long-lived, and unmistakably refined.
Since 2008, Olivier Berrouet has led winemaking at Petrus, continuing the work of his father, Jean-Claude Berrouet, who crafted 44 vintages before him. Under their care, Petrus has remained true to its identity: elegant, expressive, and deeply tied to its terroir.
