A vision rooted in Napa’s heritage
The Colgin story began with Ann Colgin’s passion for fine wine and deep respect for the land. Her first release, the celebrated Herb Lamb bottling, set the tone for an estate built on uncompromising standards. Over the decades, Colgin expanded its holdings to include three exceptional sites, each chosen for its unique terroir. In 2005, Robert Parker named Colgin Cellars “One of the Fifty Greatest Wine Estates in the World,” cementing its reputation as a benchmark for Napa Valley excellence. Today, these wines are allocated to a select clientele, yet Berry Bros. & Rudd is proud to offer limited parcels of their four cuvées, including the revered IX Estate Syrah and three Cabernet Sauvignon-based blends: Tychson Hill, Cariad, and IX Estate.
The vineyards – Napa’s hillside jewels
Colgin’s vineyards are the soul of its wines. Tychson Hill, the smallest site at 2.4 hectares, lies just north of St. Helena and carries a remarkable legacy: it was initially planted in 1860 by Josephine Tychson, the first woman to build a winery in Napa Valley. Replanted by Colgin in the mid-1990s with heritage Cabernet clones, it now yields wines of profound finesse. South of Tychson Hill lies Cariad, a 3.2-hectare parcel on volcanic, gravelly soils that impart mineral complexity to its blends. The crown jewel is IX Estate, carved from an ancient lava flow overlooking Napa Valley. It's eight hectares of well-draining clays and weathered igneous rock that nurture Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Syrah, producing wines of depth and longevity.
