Rolling green vineyard hills under a partly cloudy sky in the Paso Robles wine region, with paths winding through the vines and a winery building in the distance.

Paso Robles

Paso Robles is one of California’s most varied wine regions, known for its wide range of soils, dramatic climate, and distinctive blends. Here, Rhône and Bordeaux varieties combine to produce wines that balance ripeness with structure.

The region

Situated between San Francisco and Los Angeles, Paso Robles spans over 600,000 acres, making it one of the largest appellations in California. Its landscape is diverse, from coastal plains to upland valleys, with more than 45 recognised sub-AVAs. This complexity allows winemakers to work with multiple grape varieties and styles.

Climate and soils

Paso Robles is defined by sharp diurnal shifts: warm, dry days are offset by cool nights, moderated by the Pacific Ocean and the Templeton Gap. Calcareous soils, high in limestone, are particularly suited to Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Cabernet Sauvignon, contributing structure and freshness to the wines.

Winemaking character

Producers in Paso Robles are known for working across traditional and experimental lines. Rhône blends sit alongside varietal Cabernet Sauvignon, often with a distinctive richness supported by acidity and minerality. This combination has established Paso Robles as a serious player in modern Californian winemaking.
