2023 Pagodes de Cos Blanc, Bordeaux

Description

80% Sauvignon Blanc; 20% Sémillon.

Pascal Chatonnier is the consultant here for the whites (Eric Boissenot for the reds). The aim is to capture the salty, oyster shell tang of the terroir for this wine, which is further north in the Médoc, near Goulée. Being closer to the ocean, the site is windy, which slows ripening and captures the lovely marine notes that complement the subtle notes of pear and lime blossom. This charming wine has a little extra. While not especially for the long term, it will also evolve with a little time in bottle.

Critics reviews

James Lawther MW 15/20

80% Sauvignon Blanc, 20% Sémillon. Cask sample.

Aromatically appealing but a trifle short and thin on the palate. Don’t let it hang around.

The 2023 Pagodes de Cos Blanc flies out with energetic notes of lemon curd, white peaches, and fresh pears plus nuances of wild thyme and elderflower. The light-bodied palate is crisp and vibrant, with bags of citrusy flavors and great length. The blend is 80% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Semillon, with pH 3.10.

Neal Martin 89-91/100

The 2023 Pagodes de Cos Blanc is a blend of 80% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Sémillon. It has a light but pleasant bouquet with orchard fruit and linden, unassuming but well-defined. The palate is marked by quite seductive lime cordial notes on the entry mixed with mango and light Satsumas with a harmonious finish—very fine.

Yohan Castaing 89-91/100

Aromas of citron confit, lemon oil, white fruits and herbs preface the 2023 Pagodes de Cos Blanc, a layered and juicy, round and broad wine that is moderately weighted, fresh, elegant and finishes with a slightly short and mouthwatering aftertaste. This is a blend of 80% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Sémillon.

Jeb Dunnuck 92-94/100

Mostly Sauvignon but with 20% Semillon, the 2023 Pagodes De Cos Blanc has a lovely Sauvignon character with its ripe citrus, juicy grapefruit, mint, and a kiss of chalky minerality. It's balanced, medium-bodied, has racy acidity, and incredible purity.

Jeb Dunnuck, JebDunnuck.com (May 2024)
Jane Anson MW 92/100

Spiced saffron and white peach, slate grip and rise through the palate, plenty of freshness and juicy citrus, great energy. Harvest September 5 to 15, 7% new oak. 10ha of white for the Estournel wines, 18 years on from its first vintage in 2005.

James Suckling 95-96/100

There’s depth and focus to this white, with sliced-lemon and green-mango character, as well as orange blossom. Some stone and salt, too. Full-bodied with a radiant mid-palate and lots of intensity. Salty at the end. 80% sauvignon blanc and 20% semillon.
