Tasting note

Continuing from the 2022, Callie has moved away from the complete whole bunch phase of the past, to something of a hybrid of two systems. 70% remains whole bunch submerged cap (a la Jamet), with 30% conventional crushed fruit (50:50 whole bunch and destemmed). A handful of gentle pump overs are included for the first time since 2017. The results – fabulous.

The core of blue fruit I find the signature of Porseleinberg is here, but it seems that there is even more perfume than before, with a wonderful pure red fruit element appearing with time in the glass. Fennel, iron and lots of black pepper spice that blossoms given time. This is another great Porseleinberg. More elegant than some past vintages, but with all the power and structure you’ve come to expect from the farm and Callie’s hand.

Critics reviews

Tim Atkin MW 100/100
The 2023 growing season was "dry and difficult", according to Callie Louw, at least in this wild and starkly beautiful corner of the Swartland, but you wouldn’t know it from the quality of this superlative Syrah. Picked late, right up to March 8th, it has the concentration and intensity of a small crop. Fermented with 90% whole clusters, with 70% of the wine using the submerged cap technique, it's one of the most sublime Porseleinbergs yet, pairing aromas of incense, thyme and black pepper with firm, age-worthy tannins, blackberry, red berry and liquorice flavours and a stony, mineral core. Truly world class.

About this wine

Swartland

Swartland

After Stellenbosch, the west coast district of Swartland (25 miles north of Cape Town, between the towns of Malmesbury and Piketberg) now ranks as the Cape's most exciting wine district. Its ancient geology has brought a mix of shale, arenite sandstone and granite soils air-conditioned by the Atlantic Ocean nearby. Chenin Blanc and Shiraz seem to do best, as exemplified by Eben Sadie and Mullineux.
