Description

En Echelas is a wine with an interesting story. Part of Riffault’s Pinot Noir vineyard, La Noue, sits just outside the Sancerre appellation, so Stéphane has to declare it as Vin de France. With the rulebook out of the window, he decided to train the vines on individual stakes (“en echalas”), as is often done in the northern Rhône, and make a special cuvée.

Made using 100% whole bunches and aged in two 350 litre oak barrels for 18 months, this is a supremely silky expression of Pinot Noir. The nose has wonderfully pure strawberry fruit, along with some floral touches and a little cinnamon. The mid-palate is creamy and voluptuous, while the finish is perfectly fresh, bright acids cleansing the palate with precision and finesse.

Evoking aromas of flowers, peony, rose, lilac and iris mingled with delicate blackberry notes, the 2022 Echalas, matured for 18 months in barrel, possesses a medium to full-bodied, satiny and seamless palate with a creamy texture and an incisive mid-palate. It concludes with a penetrating, saline finish. This is a real success that could age beautifully over the next decade. Part of the La Noue parcel is planted with stakes or échalas, as in Northern Rhône.
