2020 Riesling, Réserve, Trimbach, Alsace

Description

Don’t let the pale hue deceive you: this is a complex wine with a lot of character. The nose is generous with aromas of lemon sherbet, a touch of green apple, and a subtle underscore of liquorice that keeps the bright citrus in check. The palate: wow. Amazing power and tension, and incredible length. Very ripe white peach, blossom flower and a bracing sharpness – a mineral element that is testament to the limestone soils the grapes are grown on. Very pure, with exhilarating length. This is a wine to enjoy now, or confidently hold.

Critics reviews

James Suckling 94/100
Super-ripe lemon, fresh pineapple and herb aromas pour from the glass of this medium-bodied, concentrated and sophisticated dry riesling. Completely dry, with excellent balance at the long, very clean finish. 100% estate fruit from Ribeauvillé and Bergheim. Drink or hold.
James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com (Jun 2022)
James Button 90/100
The Trimbach family has been making wines in Alsace since 1626. This Riesling has limey aromas with a hint of floral and rubber notes. Tight, dry lime and apple palate, with a pithy character and a touch of exotic fruits. Fresh finish.

Stephan Reinhardt 88/100
Bottled bone dry and with 13.5% stated alcohol, the Trimbach 2020 Riesling Réserve unites the domaine's fruit of Ribeauvillé and Bergheim to a dense and tightly knit, rather robust classic with concentrated fruit representing the old vines on limestone soils. The wine is powerful and grippy and reveals remarkable acidity, yet I find the finish a bit astringent or at least drying. 40,000 bottles produced. Tasted at the domaine.

About this wine

Alsace

Alsace

Although 50 percent of Alsace’s wine is still made by cooperatives, the region remains the source of some of the world's finest white wines. There are myriad reasons for this: its 47.5 degrees north latitude ensures high sunshine levels; its deep continental climate and diverse array of soil types; the cultural meticulousness of the local populace; and the choice of noble varieties such as Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer.
