Anne Krebiehl MW 98/100

The 2015 Riesling Schoelhammer Vendange Tardive, from the gray Triassic marls of the Schoenenbourg Grand Cru, was made with botrytized fruit. A touch of honeycomb on the nose is wrapped in smokiness, catching ripe peach and Mirabelle notes in its fine cloud of fumée. Later on, a hint of chamomile makes a deliciously heady appearance. The purest candied peach note emerges, guided and illuminated by lemon oil. Purity, poise, richness and the sleekest silhouette make this a timeless wine of supreme elegance, carrying all the customary creaminess of the Schoenenbourg, granting you delicious freefall in its unlimited softness. Exquisitely clean botrytis makes for the purest fruit. 69 g/L of residual sweetness lend generosity and gentle sweetness. (Sweet)

This shouldn’t work, because it lies in the no-man’s land between dry and off-dry, but it handles this spectacularly well. When you pick up a glass of this extraordinary Alsace riesling you descend into an expansive landscape of yellow fruit, dried herbs and spices. Giant concentration, but every bit as graceful. Then comes the mind-blowing minerality in the finish, which doesn’t want to stop. Decades of aging potential. Drink from release.

About this wine

Alsace

Alsace

Although 50 percent of Alsace’s wine is still made by cooperatives, the region remains the source of some of the world's finest white wines. There are myriad reasons for this: its 47.5 degrees north latitude ensures high sunshine levels; its deep continental climate and diverse array of soil types; the cultural meticulousness of the local populace; and the choice of noble varieties such as Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer.
