Tasting note

Aged for several years on the lees, this is a delicious blend of 50% Pinot Noir and 50% Chardonnay, sourced from a selection of Grand Cru vineyards. The expressive bouquet reveals aromas of dried flowers, wild strawberry and toasted hazelnut. The palate is both opulent and creamy, featuring complex notes of dried apricot and mandarin alongside undertones of vanilla and salted caramel, before leading onto a very persistent finish. For those who like a richer style of Champagne, this is certainly worthy of a place in your cellar.

Essi Avellan MW 93-95/100
Lovely yeast-complexed gunpowdery nose with lemon curd, meringue, white flowers. Superb acidity expressed as vitality and drive. Smooth and caressing but at the same time invigorating and energizing. Very youthful still shortly after release with potential.

All grands and premiers crus. 50% Pinot Noir from the Montagne de Reims and Vallée de la Marne. 50% Chardonnay. Aged on lees for six years. Dosage 9 g/l .

Tasted blind. Smells a bit like putty. Quite rich and vibrant. Flattering. Chardonnay ascendant. Reminds me a little of a California Chard. Creamy, slightly sickly. The least impressive wine of the tasting. 2009?

An ever-reliable bottling from Taittinger. A Pinot Noir-dominated blend that demonstrates the potential richness of this variety. The dosage is too high here; the richness is on the verge of becoming jammy. Negativity aside, this is a delicious wine (but it would be better with a lower dosage). Yellow & black fruited aromas of coffee are beginning to emerge as this wine enters its final phase of life. Chewy and long, this will hold easily for the next few years. Alcohol 12.50%.

A ripe but fresh nose is comprised by notes of baked apple, yeast, brioche and a hint of rose petal. The round, rich, pliant and quite forward medium-bodied flavors are almost soft because while the supporting effervescence is relatively fine it's not particularly dense and as such I found the overall effect to lack a touch of vibrancy on the otherwise reasonably dry and clean finish. This would better suit those who prefer less aggressive examples of Champagne when it comes to the mousse. In sum, this is perfectly good but I much preferred its 2008 counterpart.
