The story of Opus One began with an unprecedented collaboration between two giants of the wine world. Baron Philippe de Rothschild brought the legacy of Bordeaux’s Pauillac, while Robert Mondavi contributed his trailblazing vision for Californian fine wine. Together, they established the estate in Napa Valley’s Oakville sub-region, with the first vintage released in 1979.
Opus One farms four estate-owned vineyards in Oakville, including prized parcels within the legendary To Kalon vineyard. These diverse terroirs provide the foundation for the estate’s signature complexity and refinement.
Opus One follows a meticulous approach rooted in Bordeaux tradition but adapted to Napa’s unique climate. The flagship wine is a Cabernet Sauvignon–dominant Bordeaux blend aged for around 18 months in new French oak barrels. This careful process produces wines with structure, finesse and remarkable ageing potential.
The estate produces two wines: Opus One – a vintage Bordeaux blend defined by elegance, concentration and longevity. Overture – a non-vintage Bordeaux blend, created from multiple vintages to deliver immediate approachability and supple charm.
