Stephen Pannell’s reputation was forged early, winning the prestigious Jimmy Watson Trophy in his first year as Chief Winemaker at Hardy’s. His experience spans iconic estates such as Château Mouton Rothschild, Domaine Dujac, and Aldo Vajra, bringing a global sensibility to his work in South Australia. In 2004, he and his wife, Fiona, established S.C. Pannell Wines in McLaren Vale, guided by a philosophy of minimal intervention and respect for terroir. This approach has earned him widespread acclaim, including a second Jimmy Watson Trophy—an achievement unmatched in Australian wine history.
Grenache at its finest
The fruit for Sunrise 99 comes from the historic Sunrise block in Blewitt Springs, which was planted over a century ago on classic sands at an elevation of 140 metres. Little Branch, by contrast, is drawn from 30-year-old vines rooted in ancient Maslin Beach sands flecked with ironstone. Both wines exemplify Pannell’s mastery of Grenache: fragrant, detailed, and structured, yet graceful enough to age with confidence. In a warm climate where elegance can be elusive, these wines stand apart—proof that patience and site selection yield extraordinary results.
