From Rhône to Rioja
Grenache is at the heart of the Southern Rhône in France, where it lends colour, weight and spice to blend alongside Syrah and Mourvèdre. In Châteauneuf-du-Pape, however, it takes centre stage, with legendary producers like Château Rayas proving its power as a solo performer. Across the Languedoc and Provence, Grenache appears in myriad forms: Grenache Noir in robust reds, Grenache Gris and Grenache Blanc in distinctive whites, and Grenache Rosé as the defining grape of Provence’s elegant pink wines.
Garnacha across Spain and beyond
Spain remains Grenache’s spiritual home, thriving under the name Garnacha Tinta (or Garnaxa in Catalonia). Garnacha shows remarkable versatility from Rioja – where it partners Tempranillo in classic blends – to Navarra, where it produces lighter reds and vibrant rosados. The grape has even crossed the Mediterranean to Sardinia, where it is celebrated as Cannonau. Wherever it is grown, Grenache delivers approachable wines full of character, with styles that range from juicy and youthful to complex and age-worthy.
