Vineyards of Chappellet Winery on Pritchard Hill under a clear sky, rows of vines stretching up a rugged slope.

Chappellet Winery

Founded in 1967, Chappellet was among the first wineries to establish itself on Napa Valley’s rugged hillsides. Still family-owned, the estate has built a reputation for producing some of California’s most refined and age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon, grown on the distinctive volcanic soils of Pritchard Hill.

History and vision

Donn and Molly Chappellet set out to create wines that could stand alongside the great estates of Bordeaux. Their pioneering decision to plant vineyards on the rocky slopes above Lake Hennessey has defined the estate’s style for over five decades. At elevations of up to 1,800 feet, Chappellet’s vineyards benefit from thin, stony soils and marked diurnal temperature shifts. These conditions yield small, concentrated berries, producing structured wines of depth and longevity.

Key wines

Chappellet has been at the forefront of sustainable viticulture in Napa. The estate’s organic practices focus on soil health and biodiversity, ensuring resilience and balance in vineyards and wine. The flagship Cabernet Sauvignon from Pritchard Hill is renowned for its structure and ageing potential. Chappellet also produces Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc and Rhône-inspired blends, each reflecting the character of their hillside vineyards.
