Spottswoode Estate

Spottswoode stands as one of Napa Valley’s most distinguished estates. Set against the Mayacamas Mountains on the western edge of St. Helena, its forty acres are devoted mainly to Cabernet Sauvignon, with smaller Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Sauvignon Blanc plantings. Family-owned and organically farmed for nearly four decades, Spottswoode has earned an international reputation for elegant, structured and long-lived wines.

A historic estate

Founded in 1882 by George Schonewald, the property was later named Spottswoode by Mrs Albert Spotts in 1910. Its iconic pre-Prohibition Victorian home still graces the label today. The Novak family took ownership in 1972, and a decade later, Mary Novak released the estate’s first Cabernet Sauvignon, marking the beginning of its modern reputation. Mary’s daughters, Beth Novak Milliken and Lindy Novak, now guide the estate, supported by winemaker and vineyard manager Aron Weinkauf. Their stewardship has ensured Spottswoode’s continued excellence while reinforcing its place among Napa’s leading producers.

The vineyard

Forty acres of vines are planted predominantly to Cabernet Sauvignon, with smaller plots of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Sauvignon Blanc. Organically farmed since 1985 and certified in 1992, the estate also embraces regenerative and sustainable practices that protect its land for future generations. Spottswoode’s wines consistently earn praise from leading critics. Joe Czerwinski of The Wine Advocate placed the estate among the world’s most distinguished names, comparing it to Ornellaia, Cos d’Estournel and Cullen’s Diana Madeline — testament to its stature in the pantheon of great Cabernet producers.
