Grattamacco

Grattamacco

Grattamacco is a name synonymous with the birth of Bolgheri's fine wine legacy. Founded in 1977, it was one of the very first estates—alongside the legendary Sassicaia—to recognise the region’s potential. Set high on a hilltop overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, between Castagneto Carducci and Bolgheri, the estate commands a dramatic position along Tuscany’s Maremma coast.

Learn more about Grattamacco

Of the 80 hectares on the property, 29 are planted to vines, with just 10 hectares reserved for the flagship Grattamacco wine. These vineyards lie on steep, sun-soaked slopes 100 metres above sea level, naturally protected by a surrounding valley. Grattamacco practices certified organic farming, with vines averaging 20 years of age. Only the best grapes from each parcel are selected for this wine.

Grattamacco is typically a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese. Harvested entirely by hand, the Sangiovese is vinified in open-top wooden vats, while the other varieties ferment in stainless steel. Manual punch-downs ensure gentle tannin extraction. The wine is aged 18 months in French oak barriques, followed by a further 12 months in bottle before release.
