2024 Mas de Daumas Gassac, Rouge, St Guilhem-le-Désert Cité d'Aniane, Languedoc-Roussillon

Description

Founded in the 1970s by Aimé and Véronique Guibert, Mas de Daumas Gassac transformed the reputation of the Languedoc, demonstrating that world-class wines could be produced in a region once dominated by bulk production. Often referred to as the “Grand Cru of the Midi,” the estate is a benchmark of quality in southern France.

What sets Mas de Daumas Gassac apart is the incredible care and diversity in its vineyards, comprising 70 individual plots nestled within 4,000 hectares of surrounding forest, which helps improve soil health and water retention. The valley is dominated by a rare, powder-fine red glacial soil, surprisingly reminiscent of that found in the prime areas of Burgundy.

Nowadays, the Guibert family is adopting a more scientific approach to vineyard planting, matching their mosaic of soil types, altitudes, and aspects with the most suitable varieties. The Guibert brothers work alongside winemaker Benjamin d'Anglade, who has previously honed his craft at the likes of Ch. Latour, Ch. Montrose and Domaine Armand Rousseau. Head winemaker Samuel Guibert describes the vin rouge as a “Bordeaux-based blend made in a Burgundian style from a southern climate”, while the whites are consistently expressive, complex, and highly food-friendly.

Critics reviews

Jeb Dunnuck 96-98/100
Tasted from the barrel, the 2024 IGP Saint-Guilhem-Le-Désert Cité D’Aniane is very young and fruity, hinting at a beautiful complexity to come. With its bouquet of floral notes, blueberry, blackberry, cumin, star anise, ink, black pepper, tobacco, and red pepper, one can sense the influence of Cabernet Sauvignon, which is once again the dominant grape variety in this cuvée. Fresh and surprisingly salty, this is a supple, easy-drinking red with a tight but very fine structure and a distinguished character reminiscent of a tailor-made three-piece suit, with generosity thrown in for good measure. It will evolve toward greater complexity, finesse, and depth and will be superb over the next 20 years.

Full bottle 1,367 g. Not yet released. Mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, with tiny percentages of Merlot, Pinot, Tannat, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Nielluccio, Montepulciano, Saperavi, Carménère, Tempranillo and Abouriou. 12 to 15 months in oak barrels (from one to seven years old).

Dark and edgy; blood and raspberries; anise and shiso; ink and olive and iron. Very bloody at this raw, wild stage of its barely begun life. It tastes gothic. A baby vampire howling at its new world, fangs unretractable, tannins as velvety as a panther cub, lusty, luscious and dripping with blackberry juice, everything on edge. Wait and wait.

Ripe black cherry, blackcurrant, fresh violets and subtle cedar tones introduce this barrel sample of the 2024 Rouge. Dried herbs add more aromatic complexity. Round and polished, the refreshing 2024 is built around a core of smooth tannins and a firm line of acidity. This is a distinctively elegant red Mas de Daumas Gassac in the making.
