2024 Château Beauséjour, St Emilion, Bordeaux

Description

72% Merlot; 28% Cabernet Franc.

Under the guidance of Joséphine Duffau-Lagarrosse, this small property continues to make exciting progress. The vineyard is just 6.8 hectares, in a perfect amphitheatre with all the vines on limestone. Joséphine employed 50 people for harvest, picking 0.7 hectares per day and selecting only perfect berries. The same meticulous detail was applied in the new cellar. This is a wonderful success, with floral peony and violet aromas and an intensity on the palate, less saline than some but with a real sense of more to give.

Critics reviews

Jane Anson 95/100
Concentrated ruby, purity of fruit expression, chalky tannins with redcurrant and raspberry, lift and juice, white pepper spice, the team here manages to capture the best of the vintage and this is a wine with ageing ability and a quiet sense of joy. 3.36ph, 7% press wine in here, more than usual, using 114h half barrels for the press wine, long slow harvest. Josèphine Duffau Lagarosse co-owner and winemaker. 40% new oak (compared to 70% in 2022, for example), Axel Marchal and Julien Viaud consultants.

The 2024 Beauséjour Duffau-Lagarrosse was picked from September 23 to October 7 at 28 hl/ha. It will age in 40% new oak for a planned 14 to 16 months. Significantly, this is the first vintage to be vinified in their new vat room equipped with smaller vats. It requires 10 to 15 minutes to open up, which allows the wild strawberry, blackcurrant, briar and light chalky aromas to emerge from the glass. This is not powerful, though certainly precise and well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant and supple tannins. It is very balanced, with an edginess on the back palate and a deft hint of black pepper toward the finish. This feels longer than its peers. The 2024 is a succinct Saint-Émilion that attests to the numerous improvements in the vineyard and winery.

The 2024 Beauséjour is a wine that perfectly embodies the style of the year. A Saint-Émilion with no hard edges and exquisite balance, Beauséjour is an absolute delight. Dark-toned fruit, lavender, menthol and espresso open first, followed by a kick of savory Franc overtones that lend energy. Fine, polished tannins support the subtle yet understated finish. Beauséjour is one of the more delicate 2024s in Saint-Émilion, but there is no lack of depth. The blend is 72% Merlot and 28% Cabernet Franc, with 7% press wines.

A blend of 72% Merlot and 28% Cabernet Franc, the 2024 Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse) reveals aromas of rich blackberries, spices and plums, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and lively palate that's pure and bright, with attractive energy and transparency, concluding with a long, saline finish. Yields were a modest 28 hectoliters per hectare, harvested between 23 September and 7 October, and an unusually high percentage of press wine contributes additional mid-palate density.

72% Merlot, 28% Cabernet Franc. 28 hl/ha. First vintage in the new cuverie. Cask sample.

Elegant in style with floral notes and fine, silky tannins. Light to medium weight, fresh and digeste with a chalky note on the finish but misses a little depth and intensity.

Lots of energy, showing pure black cherries, dried violets and citrus character that follow through to a medium body with very integrated tannins that give length and verve. A blend of 72% merlot and 28% cabernet franc.

Jeb Dunnuck 94-96/100
The 2024 Château Beauséjour (Duffau-Lagarrosse) is 72% Merlot and 28% Cabernet Franc aging in 40% new oak, with the balance in once-used barrels. Black raspberries, classic limestone minerality, violets, and smoky tobacco all shine here, and it's a remarkably pure, medium, almost medium to full-bodied Saint-Émilion that has remarkable tannins, perfect balance, and a great finish. It's not going to make you forget the 2022, 2020, or 2019, but it's a gorgeous 2024 that I'd be happy to have in the cellar.

Lovely pink purple colour in the glass, bright and shining. Expressive nose, so pure, so fine, lovely Cabernet Franc aromas - fruit forward but floral too. Striking straight away, so silky and streamlined but generous in terms of tannin texture and fruit density. Joyful and lifted, this focused on the fruit with delicacy and purity. Touches of spice and bitter orange join the expression but this is complex and multifaceted. There’s tightness and concentration but it’s held in line with finesse, no aggressivity. A really honest interpretation of the vintage here with excellent ageing potential. Ageing 40% new oak for up to 16 months. 3.32pH. 7% press. An excellent wine by Josephine Duffau-Lagarosse who almost doubled the amount of harvesters and picked 'really slowly' for optimal ripeness before sorting in the vineyard, on two sorting table, a destemmer and densimetric bath with no sugar. Consultants Julien Viaud and Axel Marchal.

About this wine

Saint-Emilion

Saint-Emilion

First officially classified in 1954, St-Émilion is one of Bordeaux's largest winemaking appellations, producing more wine than Listrac, Moulis, St Estèphe, Pauillac, St Julien and Margaux combined. Many of the region's finest vineyards can be found atop the steep limestone slopes of the village itself, although a fledgling band of garagiste producers are eschewing terroir to make small-batch, deeply-concentrated wines from their homes.
