Description
Kumeu River began its journey in the 1940s when Maté Brajkovich purchased a modest vineyard near Auckland. By the 1980s, the winery had firmly established Chardonnay as its flagship varietal. Today, Maté’s son, Michael Brajkovich, leads the estate. As New Zealand’s first Master of Wine and one of its most esteemed viticulturists, Michael has unlocked the full potential of Kumeu River’s vineyards.
These wines are often likened to white Burgundy, and in blind tastings, even seasoned professionals struggle to tell them apart from their French counterparts, unless you’re already a devoted follower who recognises Kumeu’s unmistakable freshness and character. These are Grand Cru-level wines at village-level prices, with single-vineyard bottlings that can hold their own against Meursault, Chassagne, and Puligny-Montrachet.
The 2024 vintage is celebrated as one of the best ever at the estate. Despite poor flowering at the start of the season, the remainder of the growing season was excellent, with dry, warm conditions and lower yields contributing to some of the most concentrated Chardonnay grapes ever produced at the estate.
Tasting note
Vintage after vintage, I am always incredibly impressed by the Kumeu River Estate, and this is no exception. Deemed to be the best vintage ever, and I couldn’t agree more. A blend of the estate’s six vineyards offering a citric blend with an apricot note to finish. Crisp, acidity runs alongside. This will drink superbly from 2026.

Critics reviews
Full screwcapped bottle 1,318 g. Hand-harvested, whole-bunch pressed before 100% spontaneous barrel ferment in French oak with 100% malo (20% new oak). 11 months' ageing in barrel. Always a blend of the same six Kumeu vineyards (of which they own three) and in 2024 the crop was reduced but fruit was much more concentrated. No new oak in 2023 so they had lots of (François Frères) barrels to use. It's a struggle to keep vines in the ground in Kumeu. They think they're OK for the next 20 years so long as the owners, mainly Chinese, will agree to lease the land. Average age of vines would be more than 20 years.
High-toned nose then rich lemon-barley-water flavours. And real grip on the end. No hurry to drink this. Lots of concentration and masses of potential. Still youthful! Lots to chew on. Worth waiting until at least 2026 before drinking but it's already approachable.
