2024 Château Beychevelle, St Julien, Bordeaux

Description

55% Cabernet Sauvignon; 42% Merlot; 3% Petit Verdot.

This is one of the most succulent wines of the Left Bank in 2024. It is very much in the Beychevelle style but a touch more discrete than usual. There is a lovely, succulent density married to brambly dark fruit and the finish broadens as it fades. The palate is smooth and seamless, with the creamy tannins folded into the wine. After all the trials of the year, Philippe Blanc admitted, modestly, that is he pleased enough with the result.

Critics reviews

Jane Anson 92/100
Deep ruby cherry colour, this opens with bright plum and blackberry fruits, laced with cloves, white pepper, apple blossom. St Julien signature but the acidity accentuates the tannic grip at this point. Grands Millésimes De France, 41hl/ha yield.

The 2024 Beychevelle might very well be the wine of the vintage in Saint-Julien. It is certainly among the very best I tasted on the Left Bank. Plush, inky and beautifully layered in the glass, the 2024 is so silky and inviting. Blue/purplish fruit, lavender, mocha and spice are some of the many notes that stain the palate. The sustained, resonant finish is a thing of beauty. Tasted two times.

Good depth and complexity here from this light, acid-driven vintage. Violets, fresh herbs, blackcurrants, berries and a touch of paprika and white pepper. Bright and succulent on the palate with firm, crunchy tannins and a structured finish.

Deep garnet-purple colored. Black cherries, fresh red currants and mulberries scents slowly emerge from the glass, plus hints of wild sage and pencil lead. The light to medium-bodied palate delivers red berry and savory flavors with great tension and lightly chewy tannins, finishing with a skip in its step.

The 2024 Beychevelle was picked from September 24 until October 9 and will mature in 70% new oak. This has a nicely composed, warm and sensual bouquet with plush blackberry, cassis and touches of violet. The 42% Merlot is very expressive. The palate is medium-bodied with, again, quite luxuriant tannins that lend this Beychevelle more comeliness than you would anticipate given the growing season. Perhaps it just misses a little sustain on the finish, but otherwise, this is a fine Saint-Julien. 13.3% alcohol.

55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot. Cask sample.

Aromatically expressive. Red- and dark-berry fruit to the fore. Palate fresh and harmonious with integrated tannins. Structured. Classic in style.

A pure, balanced, absolutely classy Saint-Julien, the 2024 Château Beychevelle is deep purple-hued with ample red, blue, and black fruits intermixed with notes of graphite, lead pencil, and background oak. It's balanced, medium-bodied, has polished tannins, the fresher, juicy acidity of the vintage, and a great finish. The blend is 55% Cabernet, 42% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot checking in at 13% alcohol with a pH of 3.57 and an IPT of 75.

Juicy and clean, a good lift and sense of life here. Not heavy or particularly weighty but the tannins have a round and filling mouthfeel, sleek but well textured with a push of ripe blueberries and some strawberry fruit. It stands up in the line up of St-Juliens. Acidity is still there on the finish which is great. Missing a touch more excitement and still some compaction but this ageing should help. Ageing 70% new oak. 3.57pH. 5% press wine (to check). Airpulse and pigeage to do soft extractions. Tasted three times.

About this wine

Saint-Julien

Saint-Julien

St Julien is the smallest of the ‘Big Four’ Médoc communes although, without any First Growths, it is recognised to be the most consistent of the main communes with many châteaux turning out impressive wines year after year. The wines can be judged as much by texture as flavour, and there is a sleek, wholesome character to the best. At their very finest they combine Margaux’s elegance and refinement with Pauillac’s power and substance.
