2024 IZZY Bay, Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, New Zealand

Description

We’re delighted to present the 40th vintage of Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc, featuring a special commemorative label on every bottle to mark this significant milestone. Over the past four decades, Cloudy Bay has become synonymous with exceptional Marlborough wines, and the 2024 vintage continues this legacy.

Marlborough's growing season began cold and unsettling, with sharp frosts affecting the flowering period. This led to a lower-than-average crop as summer arrived, and the region experienced its driest ten months on record, with drought declared in mid-March. The lack of rainfall further reduced the yield, and the warm weather prompted an early harvest. However, the vines ripened perfectly, allowing for precise picking at optimal maturity, resulting in a wine of remarkable quality and character.

Tasting note

The 2024 Sauvignon Blanc is quite restrained on the nose and less tropical than previous vintages. It unfurls in the glass to reveal profound and attractive citrus, lime leaf, apricot and orange blossom notes. The palate shows mouthwatering intensity, with subtle but juicy passionfruit notes melding with those of citrus, white stone fruit, makrut lime, pink peppercorn, hibiscus and pink grapefruit. A freshening saline edge and a fresh-squeezed lemon acidity carry a long, concentrated and complex finish.

Critics reviews

Jancis Robinson MW 16/20

Full screwcapped bottle 1,377 g. The fortieth vintage of this famous wine, whose debut vintage was 1985. Extremely dry summer required regular irrigation but produced healthy fruit with an early harvest. Free-run juice was cold-settled before fermentation all in tank except for 1.5% fermented warmer in large oak. A portion saw spontaneous fermentation. 55 of 81 possible ingredients went into this blend.

A powerfully pungent nose that could only be Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. It is very powerful, with lots of vibrant green-fruit flavours. Just off-dry. No that long but lots of impact on the nose and palate entry.

Consistently delicious with sliced-apple, gooseberry, and lime character. Some grass too. Medium body, creamy texture and a fresh finish. This is the fortieth vintage of this wine.

Drink now. Screw cap.

About this wine

Marlborough

Marlborough

New Zealand's answer to Napa Valley, Marlborough accounted for 47 percent of the country's vines in 2006, despite being home to just 20 percent of the nation’s 530 wineries. Around 76 percent of the vineyards are planted with Sauvignon Blanc. The region is also home to New Zealand’s small sparkling-wine industry, using the traditional method to vinify Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
