2023 Damascene, Cabernet Sauvignon, Stellenbosch, South Africa

Description

Picked before the rains caused so many problems in Stellenbosch, this is Jean's homage to the great Cabernets of history in South Africa. It'll need a couple of years in bottle to mesh together (the 2020 at dinner was brilliant). Another gem of a Cab to give Bordeaux pause for thought.

Critics reviews

Neal Martin 92/100

The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Stellenbosch comes from a granitic outcrop, matured in one-third new oak barrels for the first year and 2,000-litre Austrian oak vats for the second. This has a very attractive bouquet with a mixture of red and black fruit, touches of iris flower and potpourri emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with strict tannins that surround a core of black cherries and blueberry fruit that lend it a graceful and persistent finish. As usual, this is more successful than the Cabernet Franc.

Grapes from Vlottenburg (near Polkadraai Hills) and Helderberg on granite. Matured for 11 months in barriques, of which 40% were new, before being transferred to 2,000-litre vats for a further seven months. Enticing aromas of raspberry, cassis and tobacco plus subtle notes of vanilla and oak spice. The palate shows vivid fruit express energised by bright acidity and framed by tightly knit, fine tannins. Succulent and approachable now, but with the restraint and structure to reward time in bottle.
