2023 Château Puyblanquet, St Emilion, Bordeaux

Description

We are delighted to be the only wine merchant in the world to be able to offer you this wine in jeroboam (500cl) format. Blend: 80% Merlot; 20% Cabernet Franc.

This is one of the really good value châteaux of St Emilion. It is made by the team at Ch. La Gaffelière; much of the sensitivity informing that wine is evident here. The property’s 19 hectares of vines are on good terroir on the high ridge of clay and limestone at the eastern end of the appellation. There is a charming fluidity to the palate, with very appealing velvety textures, piqued at the finish by a leafy freshness. The wine seems relatively straightforward now, but time in wood (including 500-litre barrels) will knit it together. This is a very affordable pleasure.

Critics reviews

Antonio Galloni 87-89/100

The 2023 Puyblanquet is powerful, deep and resonant. A burly Saint-Émilion, the 2023 packs a pretty serious punch. Red/purplish fruit, rose petal, spice and menthol are all dialed up in this pretty wine. I would like to see more focus in the aromatics. This is a work in progress, slightly hampered by some Brett and angularity. Tasted two times.

Jane Anson 92/100

Gorgeous inky colour. Bright, zesty, full of bright fruit and fresh acidities, great floral aromatics, heavy spice on the finish. 50% new oak, 42hl/h yields, harvest September 20 to October 5.

About this wine

Saint-Emilion

Saint-Emilion

First officially classified in 1954, St-Émilion is one of Bordeaux's largest winemaking appellations, producing more wine than Listrac, Moulis, St Estèphe, Pauillac, St Julien and Margaux combined. Many of the region's finest vineyards can be found atop the steep limestone slopes of the village itself, although a fledgling band of garagiste producers are eschewing terroir to make small-batch, deeply-concentrated wines from their homes.
