2023 Corton-Charlemagne, Grand Cru, Domaine Pierre Vincent, Burgundy

Description

One of the most mineral and elegant expressions of Corton-Charlemagne I have experienced, this could easily go toe-to-toe with the finest Grands Crus of Puligny-Montrachet. The nose is beguiling, with floral top notes, white stone fruit, crushed chalk, and a hint of Mirabelle plum. The palate is juicy and mouthwatering, with intense freshness and stony grip. This goes against the grain of big, bold and opulent Corton-Charlemagne; instead, it delivers a chiselled, laser-like expression that will offer huge ageing potential.

Critics reviews

Neal Martin 94-96/100

The 2023 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru comes from 0.47ha split between Le Charlemagne and En Charlemagne that were picked five days apart, which Vincent said was crucial. The bouquet is intense: yellow plum, jasmine and hints of white truffle emerge with aeration. The palate is tensile and mineral-driven, with real tension and mineralité. It's a linear and strict style of Corton-Charlemagne with a pleasant bitterness on the finish. This is a very serious white Burgundy that will age with style.

About this wine

Corton-Charlemagne

Corton-Charlemagne

Two specific vineyards, En Charlemagne and Le Charlemagne, make up half of this appellation, while white grapes grown in seven others may also be sold as Corton-Charlemagne. As a result there can be a wide divergence in style between a south-facing location such as Pougets, which needs picking at the start of the harvest, and the western slopes in Pernand-Vergelesses which might be picked weeks later.
