Critics reviews

James Lawther MW 16/20

100% Merlot. Cask sample.

Deep purple hue. Rich and spicy on the nose. Round, succulent and fresh on the palate. Chalky tannins enhance the freshness, providing a present but refined tannic frame.

The 2023 Seraphine, 100% Merlot, is deep garnet-purple in color. It zips out with vivacious notes of wild blueberries and fresh black plums leading to touches of lavender, licorice, and cardamom. The full-bodied palate is plush and juicy, with compelling tension and a spicy kick to the finish.

The 2023 Séraphine was picked from September 8 and 9 for the Merlot and around September 28 for the Cabernet Franc, matured in 45% new oak and one 1,000-liter clay amphora. This has a very engaging, pure bouquet that blossoms in the glass: vivacious red berry fruit laced with allspice and a touch of vanilla. The palate is medium-bodied and silky-smooth in texture with very fine tannins, a taut line of acidity and a precise and poised finish that lingers in the mouth. This is the best Séraphine since its 2017 debut and more classically styled than the previous vintage.

Delivers a thoroughly Pomerol experience, from its crushed roses and cocoa dusted aromatics, to the velvety tannins and just-exuberant-enough, slow build grip. Really stands out, fresh and expansive through the palate, blackberry and damson fruits, reserved enough to give a classical interpretation of the appellation, within the signature of the vintage. Harvest September 8 through to 28, stopping for several weeks between picking the Merlot and the Cabernet Franc, with amphora used for ageing the Cab. Love the expansion through the palate which allows in the fragrance and juice. William Hancock from Trinity Hill winemaker for this vintage, working alongside owner Charlotte Krajewski.

About this wine

Pomerol

Pomerol

With 150 or so producers and roughly 740 hectares of vineyards, the smallest of Bordeaux's major appellations is home to myriad bijou domaines – many making little more than 1,000 cases per annum. If the topography and architecture of Pomerol are typical, the style of its wines is anything but. The best vineyards are planted on a seam of rich clay extending across the raised plateau of Pomerol from the boundary of St Emilion.
