2023 Château de Fieuzal Blanc, Pessac-Léognan, Bordeaux

Description

60% Sauvignon Blanc; 40% Sémillon.

The Quinn family have assembled quite the team at the property, with winemaker Stephane Carriere and Thomas Duclot now coming in as consultant. The wines are aged in traditional Bordeaux barriques with some second-fill acacia, the latter adding more of a textural element on the palate while preserving the wines fresh aromatics. There are wonderful notes of lemon sherbet, melon and blossom. The palate is weighty and concentrated with a saline, mineral grip to it. This is another strong showing from the property this year.

Critics reviews

Jeb Dunnuck 91-93/100

Light gold-hued, the 2023 Château De Fieuzal Blanc offers up lots of crushed pineapple, lemon zest, honeysuckle, and a kiss of background minerality to go with medium-bodied richness and depth on the palate. Based on 60% Sauvignon Blanc and 40% Semillon, it has a fresh, focused mouthfeel, nicely integrated acidity, and beautiful balance.

Jane Anson MW 92/100

Kicks off with slate grip that it maintains through the palate, quickly filled out with stone fruits, sage and fresh cut herbs. High spice translates into a touch of heat on the finish.

James Suckling 93--94/100

This is very focused, with good energy and nervy acidity. Medium-bodied with vibrant citrus fruit and crunchy minerality. Firm and tense finish.

The 2023 Blanc from de Fieuzal is another great success this year, exhaling pure aromas of white fruits, white flowers, ripe orchard fruits, menthol and anise. Medium to full-bodied, seamless and broad, it has a delicate, pure mid-palate with chalky dry extract and a long, mouthwatering and saline finish. The aging period in barrels may enhance its mid-palate, potentially making it one of the standout white wines of the vintage. This is a blend of 60% Sauvignon Blanc and 40% Sémillon.

About this wine

Pessac-Léognan

Pessac-Léognan

In 1986 a new communal district was created within Graves, based on the districts of Pessac and Léognan. Pessac-Léognan has the best soils of the region, very similar to those of the Médoc, although the depth of gravel is more variable, and contains all the classed growths of the region. Some of its great names, including Ch. Haut-Brion, even sit serenely and resolutely in Bordeaux's southern urban sprawl.
