2023 Condrieu, La Combe de Malleval, Stéphane Ogier, Rhône

Description

Sourced primarily from Malleval and La Combe, this wine is fresh, bright, and impeccably detailed, avoiding any excess weight. Whole-bunch pressed, with a careful balance of tank and demi-muid fermentation (40% new oak), it exudes elegance and purity. The blocked malolactic fermentation preserves its crystalline acidity, while lees aging in Stokinger barrels adds depth without overt wood influence. Notes of white flowers, stone fruit and delicate patisserie emerge on the nose, leading to a finely sculpted palate. This is a Condrieu with structure, finesse and class – a Viognier in a tuxedo.

Critics reviews

James Lawther MW 16.5/20

100% Viognier.

Aromatic peach, pear and apricot aromas. Full and gras on attack but measured in weight and style. Rich but balanced. Pure and precise. Well within itself.

Using roughly 40% new oak during its élevage, the 2023 Condrieu La Combe de Malleval starts with delicate white peach, apricot, vanilla and chamomile notes. Accentuating freshness in an earlier harvest Condrieu style, the 2023 clocks out with refinement on the uplifting finish. There's nothing overripe or tropical going on here.

About this wine

Condrieu

Condrieu

There are now plantings of Viognier worldwide but this grape’s spiritual homeland is in Condrieu – where the finest Viogniers are produced. The appellation was created in 1940, and today over 40 growers make wines from just over 100 hectares of vineyards. The wines are dry with a wonderful floral nose of peaches, apricots, violets and pears, and quite alcoholic, with low-ish acidity. Condrieus are best enjoyed when young.
