2023 Cornas, Les Chailles, Domaine Alain Voge, Rhône

Description

This is sourced from 40-year-old vines from six different lieux-dits in the granite foothills of Cornas. The name itself, meaning “chert”, refers to the mineral-rich siliceous rock specific to the area. Grapes are 100% destemmed and no new oak is used – the emphasis here is fruit purity. There is a focussed red and black fruit nose, reminiscent of a cooler vintage. The palate is vibrant, with great balance and tight, linear tannins.

Critics reviews

James Lawther MW 16.5/20

Aged 18 months in casks. Cask sample.

Slight note of reduction on the nose. Layered fruit on the palate, with the vintage's juicy aspect. Clean and persistent on the finish, the tannins quite refined. On the more refined side of Cornas.

Nicolas Greinacher 90-92/100

Vinified from fully destemmed grapes and set to age 18 months in old oak barriques, the 2023 Cornas Les Chailles radiates black cherry, pencil shaving and floral elegance through crushed violets. Delicate and smooth, the 2023 balances freshness with a pinpoint, refined finish.

Sun-warmed rosemary and lavender, herbal and floral. This has some finesse and fruitiness on the palate, teamed with zingy acidity. It finishes dry and savoury; the fruit is a touch lean but there's some good structure here. It needs some time though, to take on weight. No new oak. In conversion to organic.

About this wine

Cornas

Cornas

Cornas was established in 1938. Only reds are made, and solely from the Syrah grape; a contributing factor to their style is the granitic soil. The wines are made traditionally and often spend two years in oak. They are also strong and powerful – a cross between Hermitage and Côte-Rôtie – but typically display less finesse. After five to 10 years of ageing the best examples take on a more elegant and complex character.
