2023 Château Margaux, Margaux, Bordeaux

Description

Blend: 89% Cabernet Sauvignon; 5% Merlot; 4% Cabernet Franc; 2% Petit Verdot.

This is an impressive wine on several levels. Its colour and intensity are profound. Yet the palate shows its cards with aplomb; this openness makes it a total pleasure to taste young, while undoubtedly being built for the long term. The bouquet is coiled with brilliantly, crisply defined notes of cassis and blackcurrant coulis – seasoned with a mouth-watering hint of Szechuan pepper. There is no doubting the tannic structure of the finish, but these are noble, burnished tannins that glide to their conclusion. The élevage will be fascinating, to see how the palate knits together, and whether its weave can be tightened to take the wine up to the next level.

Critics reviews

Jane Anson MW 98/100

Vibrant peony and ruby red colour, this hums with movement and energy through the palate, a complex bloom of lavendar and white rose flowers, fresh and dense at the same time. Classical Margaux, with the savoury quality of the best wines of the year, a ton of fine tannins with a reserved sculpted architecture. The drinkability of this vintage is such a welcome return, and this is exceptionally good quality, and a real pleasure to taste. Superb winemaking from Philippe Bascaules. 41hl/h yield compared to 25hl/h last year), 41% of the production in this 1st wine.

About this wine

Margaux

Margaux

If Pauillac is the bastion of ‘traditional’ Red Bordeaux, Margaux represents its other facet in producing wines that are some of the region’s most sensual and alluring. The largest commune in the Médoc, it encompasses the communes of Cantenac, Soussans, Arsac and Labaude, in addition to the village of Margaux itself. Its finest examples are paragons of refinement and subtlety which have few parallels in Bordeaux.
