2023 Hermitage Rouge, Domaine Marc Sorrel, Rhône

Description

The Hermitage Rouge is a blend of fruit grown on the granite of Les Bessards and the clay of Les Plantiers. The aromas of this wine have so much energy in 2023. The nose has a gorgeous mix of red and black cherries but it is redcurrant-fresh too, mineral and lifted. The palate is lovely and round, with an elegant texture and tannins that are extremely fine. They melt away making this very approachable to drink over the next three to four years – although Guillaume then recommends holding after that until it reaches double digits. The long finish drifts away on a note of pure stoney freshness.

Critics reviews

James Lawther MW 16.5/20

100% Syrah. Mainly Les Plantiers with Les Bessards. Cask sample.

Firm and assertive but aromatically reticent. Curled up in its shell. Loads of freshness. Grippy tannins. In need of élevage but shows potential.

Markedly floral, the enticing 2023 Hermitage emerges with perfumed orange blossom, rose petal and fresh violet scents. Ripe black cherry, red plum and cedar notes add more complexity. Built around finely sculpted tannins, the 2023 hits the medium- to full-bodied palate with remarkable freshness, clocking out with persistence on the detailed finish.

This has some weight, but is relatively juicy, medium-bodied and approachable for a Hermitage. Balanced acidity, good freshness, texture and bite, this needs a little time but not 10 years. Tannic for a 2023. 100% whole bunch, from lieux-dits Les Plantiers and Les Bessards. 10% matured in amphora – new for this vintage.

About this wine

Hermitage

Hermitage

The most famous of all the northern Rhône appellations, its 120 hectares produce tiny quantities of very long-lived reds. The vines were grown in Roman times, although local folklore claims their origins to be 600 years earlier. The wines are powerful, with a deep colour and firm tannins, and the potential to age for many decades. The best Hermitage is produced from several climats blended together.
