2023 Château la Conseillante, Pomerol, Bordeaux

Description

88% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc.

Marielle Cazeau and her team have produced another outstanding wine this year. Merlot is again dominant in the blend at 88%, with the remainder as Cabernet Franc. It is a joy to taste even now with strawberry, cassis and lavender on the nose. The palate is lavish yet focused, with purity of fruit, impressive structure and a remarkably long finish. Despite the richness and power, Conseillante once again retains this beautiful mineral edge and freshness, creating total balance in the wine. This is a standout wine, not only in Pomerol, but across the whole vintage.

Jane Anson 97/100

A punch of floral aromatics sets the scene for this gorgeous wine, and this is a brillant La Conseillante with textured powerful depths to the blueberry and blackberry fruit, laced with cocoa bean and espresso, and a fame of juicy tannins on the giving structure and lift. Easily among the most successful wines of Pomerol in the vintage. Started picking September 7 and finished October 2. 3.6ph. 3% of amphora, 43hl/h yield. 70% aged in new oak.

About this wine

Pomerol

Pomerol

With 150 or so producers and roughly 740 hectares of vineyards, the smallest of Bordeaux's major appellations is home to myriad bijou domaines – many making little more than 1,000 cases per annum. If the topography and architecture of Pomerol are typical, the style of its wines is anything but. The best vineyards are planted on a seam of rich clay extending across the raised plateau of Pomerol from the boundary of St Emilion.
