2023 Pommard, Domaine François Buffet, Burgundy

Description

This is typically a very fine village Pommard, which is unsurprising when you consider that half of it comes from the Premier Cru of Les Combes Dessus. There is pure black cherry on the nose with some spice. It has a little more structure and shoulders than the Volnays in this cellar. The tannins are ripe, present and firm, giving grip and texture. But this is fine and elegant, with a spicy, mineral-driven finish.

Jasper Morris MW 88-91/100
Includes some premier cru fruit from Les Combes. Bright red purple, more crimson, with a slightly sombre nose before a swelling of blood red fruit on the palate and firmer tannins. The fruit returns very well behind. A little bit awkward at the moment but I would tip this to mature more harmoniously.

Two vineyards stand out: the lower part of Les Rugiens, which has been mooted for promotion to Grand Cru status, and the five-hectare, walled Clos des Epéneaux, monopoly of Comte Armand.
