2023 Pommard, Benjamin Leroux, Burgundy

Description

This is a blend of two vineyards: Cras and Vaumuriens. The former is on deeper, red clay soils in the lower part of Pommard; the latter is a shallower site on the slope, with more limestone. The nose is inviting, with generous red fruit and an open-knit feel which follows through to the palate. This is quite an easy-going Pommard with bright acidity and just enough grip to remind you of its origins.

From Cras and Vaumuriens, one below and one above, to make a balanced Pommard. Mid ruby purple, not too deep. A lovely fruit on the palate after a restrained nose, a good balance between tannins and acidity, while the fruit drives on through impressively.

Two vineyards stand out: the lower part of Les Rugiens, which has been mooted for promotion to Grand Cru status, and the five-hectare, walled Clos des Epéneaux, monopoly of Comte Armand.
