2023 Domaine de l'A, Côtes de Castillon, Bordeaux

Description

Blend: 75% Merlot; 25% Cabernet Franc.

This is a very good wine from dynamic husband-and-wife team Stéphane and Christine Derenoncourt. Despite two hectares being lost to mildew early in the season, the eventual crop had a good skin-to-juice ratio. The grapes were highly concentrated, to the pleasant surprise of the Derenoncourts.

The nose is elegant and refined, with notes of wildflowers and dark forest berries. The palate is intense, vibrant and well textured, with layers of juicy blackcurrant and red cherry. You really feel the limestone soils here, with characteristically chalky tannins leading to a wonderfully saline, mineral finish. Stéphane describes 2023 overall as a vintage of undeniable freshness, with each wine having its own identity. Domaine de l’A encapsulates this perfectly.

Critics reviews

William Kelley 91-93/100

A delicate, perfumed bouquet of violet, dark wild berries and cherries prefaces the 2023 Domaine de l'A, a medium to full-bodied, deep, profound and layered wine with velvety tannins, bright acids and a fleshy core of fruit that concludes with a long, mineral finish. As usual, this is an excellent performance.
