2023 Riesling, Smaragd, Achleiten, Prager, Wachau, Austria

Description

Good aromatics, with herbs and a hint of verbena on the nose. On tasting, it seems to be more rounded than the Steinriegel, with lower acidity and a good jump-up in quality and class. It is incredibly well-balanced, with peach flavours and some nice pear drops in the background. For me, this is the most approachable of the 2023 Rieslings, although I would still cellar it for a couple of years as it has cracking potential.

Critics reviews

Anne Krebiehl MW 95/100

The 2023 Riesling Achleiten Smaragd has a lovely flinty, smoky note of green moss spreading out into citrus foliage, delicate, serene and bright. The palate is slightly rounder than the nose suggests, adding supple Reine Claude plum flesh and juiciness to the mid-palate, where even pale peach gets a look in. It is very smooth and ripe with pale stone fruit. Finesse becomes apparent on the finish with tingling citrus notions. Dry).

Pale green, yellow, silver reflections. Fresh yellow peach, delicate hints of mango, blossom honey, with candied lime zest in the background. Juicy, taut, tightly woven white stone fruit, lively structure, lemon nuances on the finish. It appears relatively light-footed, sticks well, and has certain ageing potential.
