2023 Volnay, Domaine François Buffet, Burgundy

Description

This comes from two plots: Les Famines and La Gigotte. Marc-Olivier explains that the former brings ripeness and tannin, the latter freshness. Les Famines is slightly bigger at 0.6 hectares, but this is a 50-50 blend of the two sites. This has supple, intense fruit on the nose, with a touch of reduction. With very bright, pure fruit, this is long and quite complex for a village wine. There is good concentration here, but it feels energetic and bright.

It is rather charming and very appealing, with no rough edges and a little fine tannin underneath. It is just what modern 2023 burgundy should taste like—maybe not for the long term, but with masses of fruity appeal.

From Les Famines and Gigotte. Almost an imperial purple colour but the nose is flirting with volatility. Plump raspberry, a softer finish, then a dry tannin. Nearly lovely but not completely together, with a softer finish.

The finest and most elegant red wines of the Côte de Beaune are grown in Volnay, a village which might be twinned with Chambolle-Musigny in the Côte de Nuits, for the high active chalk content in the soil and comparatively low clay content. Whereas in earlier times Volnay was made in a particularly light, early drinking style, these days there are many producers making wines which age extremely well.
