2023 Grüner Veltliner, Smaragd, Achleiten, Stockkultur, Prager, Wachau, Austria

Description

A powerful, deeply complex Grüner Veltliner from one of my favourite Austrian producers. Although slightly restrained at first, the bouquet opens up to produce subtle notes of citrus and white fruit alongside hints of blossom. The palate is well-rounded, broad and generous, with an array of lingering stone and citrus fruits and a touch of salinity. The texture is soft with a piercingly fresh acidity, the perfect counterbalance to the richer fruit. The finish is exceptionally persistent and immensely satisfying. Patience will certainly be rewarded with this wine; it has all the attributes to age superbly—another outstanding wine from Prager.

Critics reviews

Anne Krebiehl MW 95/100

The 2023 Grüner Veltliner Ried Achleiten Stockkultur Smaragd is from the middle reaches of the Achleiten and, as the name suggests, from single-stake vines, densely planted in 1937 and dry-farmed. Beautifully aromatic dried moss and some smoky yarrow are subtly spicy and savoury. The palate is super smooth and very fluid. This seems riper and denser, yet that finesse and grace are there, speaking of white pepper. The finish is rounded and smooth on this almost viscous wine. Dry).

Pale green, yellow, silver reflections. A hint of grapefruit, fine yellow apple fruit nuances, delicate mango, subtle herbal savouriness, and dark minerality. Powerful, taut, white apple fruit, racy acid structure, delicately herbal on the finish, salty aftertaste, lime in the aftertaste, a taut food companion, sure maturity and certain ageing potential.
