2023 Santenay, Cuvée "S", David Moreau, Burgundy

Description

This marvellous-value wine is named after David’s grandmother, Simone. It is a blend of two plots, Les Cornières and Les Charmes Dessus. Both are notable in that the vines consistently suffer from millerandage, giving small berries with thick skins. This wine consequently has impressive intensity and concentration, with delicious spicy black fruit flavours. It will benefit from a few years’ cellaring, with good potential to take on complexity with age.

More crimson than ruby with a more sombre depth to the nose. Less charm today. Dark fruit, some black raspberries, more structured, more restrained though with an attractive summer pudding fruit showing through at the finish.

The 2023 Santenay Cuvée S includes 20 to 25% whole bunch, mostly millerandé bunches. This has a detailed and complex bouquet with more mineralité compared to the Les Hâtes. The palate is well balanced with a silky-smooth entry, vibrant red cherry and raspberry fruit, and a lightly spiced, white-pepper-dusted finish. This is an excellent follow-up to the 2022.
