2023 Côte-Rôtie, Ampodium, Domaine René Rostaing, Rhône

Description

Components of the final blend tasted from barrel.

Ampodium is a blend of fruit from 20 different parcels across 15 to 16 lieux dits which, this year, also includes the always impressive Viallère. The wine is unusually open at this stage, being very expressive and generous with plenty of red and black cherry fruit. The palate is soft and rich yet with that wonderful freshness that defines Rostaing. This a surprisingly approachable and very delicious Ampodium.

Critics reviews

Nicolas Greinacher 91-93/100

The 2023 Côte-Rôtie Ampodium entices with zesty blood orange, black cherry and violet notes. Medium-bodied with a fresh, juicy profile, the 2023 is remarkably accessible, offering total freshness and class. This is a Côte-Rôtie to watch, closing with stemmy subtleties on the juicy finish.

Matt Walls 93/100

A medium-bodied style, this has a good sense of vibrancy, lovely bright acidity and crunchy, defined tannins. Raspberry scented, with blood orange notes too – it's very fresh but ripe, with great energy and pep. It's not hugely concentrated, but there's a lovely taut, briskly tannic structure. 90% whole bunches this year – Tupin was destemmed a bit.

About this wine

Côte-Rôtie

Côte-Rôtie

Côte-Rôtie stands as one of the Rhône Valley’s most revered appellations, producing Syrah-based wines of remarkable depth and complexity. Its steep, sun-soaked slopes have been cultivated since Roman times, yet the region’s modern reputation for excellence is a relatively recent triumph. Today, Côte-Rôtie is synonymous with precision, elegance, and longevity—qualities that place its finest bottles alongside the world’s most sought-after wines.
