2023 Hermitage Blanc, Les Rocoules, Domaine Marc Sorrel, Rhône

Description

Les Rocoules is a single vineyard, planted on limestone soils in 1926 with 90% Marsanne and 10% Roussanne. The 2023 is stunning, with an incredibly expressive nose of stone fruit and fresh apricot all held together by a tight, mineral backbone. The palate is full of beautiful fleshy, yellow peach fruit, all fresh and pure with a twist of Cape Gooseberry on the long, mouthwatering, exceptionally balanced finish.

Critics reviews

James Lawther MW 17+/20

90% Marsanne, 10% Roussanne. Vines planted in 1926. Aged 20 months in oak. Cask sample.

Floral and honeyed notes. Added complexity and concentration. Dense, broad and textural, with the potential to age.

Nicolas Greinacher 93-95/100

Using grapes from 100-year-old vines from the same name lieu-dit, the 2023 Hermitage Blanc Les Rocoules bursts from the glass with redolent verbena tea, wet stone, hay, jasmine and a slice of yellow apple. Crisp and intense, the full-bodied 2023 is yet another brilliant Les Rocoules in the making. It’s less punchy compared to the knock-out 2022, but outright delicious nonetheless. Like the traditional Hermitage Blanc from the same vintage, the 2023 Les Rocoules carries similarly stimulating, saline nuances on the expansive finish.

Slightly darker in colour than the domaine's classic Hermitage. Intense quince and pear, very rich and powerful, but has a dry, savoury, edge and a firm, mineral grind, along with dried honey. Real power in this, which balances the richness. Drinkable now, but will age very well thanks to its salinity and extract. Very long.

James Suckling 100/100
The ideal marriage of finesse and controlled power, this has a scented nose of preserved lemons, wild herbs, dried peaches, raw almonds and a subtle touch of mild spices. Medium-bodied with a fresh center-palate of perfectly controlled dried-citrus bitterness touching the silky, almost seamless texture. Harmonious, so flavorful and well-composed, it has perfect balance and a long, long, enchanting finish. From vines planted in 1926. Drink or hold.

About this wine

Hermitage

Hermitage

The most famous of all the northern Rhône appellations, its 120 hectares produce tiny quantities of very long-lived reds. The vines were grown in Roman times, although local folklore claims their origins to be 600 years earlier. The wines are powerful, with a deep colour and firm tannins, and the potential to age for many decades. The best Hermitage is produced from several climats blended together.
