2023 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge, Clos des Papes, Paul Avril & Fils, Rhône

Description

The 2023 Clos des Papes Rouge has such a beautiful, fine nose with deep blackcurrant and black cherry fruit. All is so focused here, with a note of dark liquorice and just a gentle whiff of spice. But there is so much freshness, too, lifted wonderfully by the delicate scent of wild roses. The flavours are dominated by liquid drops of blackcurrant and blueberry fruit. This is so unbelievably silky, gliding seamlessly across the palate. There is an exquisite freshness here, too, with a beautiful, pebble-stone minerality emerging. Chalky tannins leave a light grip on the long, precise, rewarding and ultra-pure finish.

Critics reviews

Yohan Castaing 99+/100
The 2023 Chateauneuf du Pape from Clos des Papes is exquisite, wafting from the glass with a captivating bouquet of sweet red berries, iris, dark cherries, menthol, blood orange and flowers. Medium- to full-bodied, layered and textured, it’s denser than usual, with a more pronounced structure and a lovely, fleshy core of fruit. Concluding with an ethereal, saline and weightless finish, this is a strong candidate for wine of the vintage—one that should evolve with grace over the coming years to attain a likely perfect score.

Deeply coloured and quite dark in character, with damson and liquorice notes. It’s generous, full-bodied, quite spicy and fairly potent, with lovely bright, sappy acidity and very fine, soft tannins. There are some similarities with 2022 and 2020, though it’s not as punchy as 2022 nor quite as energetic as 2020. This should be very good, and will drink before both of these recent vintages. All destemmed, aged in old foudres. The estate had a good yield this year, at 25hl/ha.

A beautiful looking barrel sample, the 2023 Châteauneuf Du Pape is deep purple-hued with a classic 2023 profile of darker berry fruits, peppery garrigue, and spices. It's concentrated, medium to full-bodied, has a pure, layered, seamless profile, ripe tannins, and a great finish.

Impressive volume to this 2023, with so much texture and spices, yet it remains totally in control. Silky and fine-tuned, it showcases aromas of dark cherries, dark plums, exotic spices, dried flowers and some dried leaves. It's full-bodied with fine-grained tannins and a seductive, silky texture. There’s precise polish here. The rich fruit and intense core of spice complement each other, providing a well-composed, harmonious palate. Long, succulent and flavorful finish. Drink or hold.

Nicolas Greinacher 94-96/100

Checking in at 15.7% alcohol, the 2023 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is totally sexy. Ripe black fruits, cassis pastilles, licorice, garrigue and herbal elements are all pushed forward. Framed by smooth tannins, the full-bodied 2023 jumps at you right away. It mesmerizes with gorgeous purity of fruit, lifting freshness and ample resilience on the focused finale. I can’t wait to taste it from bottle.

Cask sample.

The nose shows a wildness, liquorice and spice. The palate follows through with those liquorice notes, animal and five spice real Mourvèdre notes). The tannins are wonderfully supple, sweet and succulent and are supported by a peppery herbal snap. Excellent concentration and a ripe dense finish. Another superb Clos des Papes.

About this wine

Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Châteauneuf-du-Pape

The largest and most important appellation in the southern Rhône, with more than 3,200 hectares of vineyards and over 80 growers, Châteauneuf-du-Pape produces more wine than the whole of the northern Rhône combined. The gloriously rich red wines, redolent of the heat and herbs of the south, are enhanced by the complexity which comes from blending several of the 14 permitted grape varieties including Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah.
