2022 Vin de Savoie, La Bergerie, Domaine du Gringet

This wine may be cloudy and have light sediment due to minimum intervention winemaking. Decanting is advised.

Named after the sheepfold that was the previous occupant of the property’s new winery, this first expression of the reincarnated Domaine du Gringet certainly does not disappoint. Aromas of ripe lemons and yellow peach combine with a fascinating herbal note reminiscent of a grassy Alpine meadow, which lingers alongside the scent of absinthe flowers and a draught of sea spray.

The palate is so interesting. Flavours of fine, sharp lemons combine with a touch of bay leaf. The texture is crisp, but the depth of the palate goes on and on in such a delicate yet confident way. There are so many layers here, and the wine has a beautiful structure. All ends on a note of Asian pear, rounded out by slightly tart nectarine on the incredibly long finish. This could be a glorious match with sushi; it is different yet utterly delicious.

Exotic spice aromas intermingle with lavender, meadow flowers and a hint of lemon. This lovely wine makes for a perfect introduction to the grape. Made from a blend of plots of this incredibly rare grape, this is one of the easier ones to understand in the range, and as such, I believe it would make a great aperitif wine to confound your guests. The aforementioned aromatics were the star of the show, but Gringet makes for an exciting wine texturally, which in itself leads to an excellent finish. All in all, it is a fun introduction to the range and a wine I thoroughly recommend trying in various circumstances. Even if to keep it to savour yourself rather than delight your friends!
