Description

This has delightful, rounded and perfumed ripeness. The structure is powerful but not out of balance. The great acidity drives the wine forward. This is a single vineyard and the quality is evident. With some toast from the barrel, it is a deeply complex wine and will be a delight when it reaches its full potential.

Already in barrels, the 2022 Chinon Coteau de Noiré, from a south-facing steep slope composed of clay and limestone, is one of the most impressive, refined wines I tasted at this address. Evoking a complex, elegant bouquet of spices, pencil lead, liquorice, dark wild berries and cedar, it’s full-bodied, ample and enveloping with a textural attack, a layered, fleshy core of fruit structured around powdery, sweet tannins and bright acids, concluding with a long, mineral and ethereal finish. It could evolve gracefully and more harmoniously with time in the cellar.

Chinon

Chinon is an important Cabernet Franc appellation that, at around 2,500 hectares, represents a slightly larger zone than its neighbour Bourgueil. Part of the appellation possesses light, sandy gravel soils to give an easy drinking style, while the remainder is blessed with a tuffeau subsoil from which the wines draw a finer structure and longevity. Neither style approaches the fullness of Bourgueil.
