2022 Bourgueil, Les Vingt Lieux Dits, Domaine du Bel Air, Loire

Description

As the name suggests, 20 plots combine to make this expression of Bourgueil. This is a serious wine made with ageing and development in mind. Darker fruits with sweet spice and bramble notes all give it a distinctly autumnal feel while the fine tannins add to its complexity. This wine has huge ageing potential and always offers incredible value – this year being no exception.

Critics reviews

Andy Howard MW 16/20

More of a rustic, old-fashioned feel. Touch of meatiness on the palate – plenty here to chew on. Intriguing violet-driven perfume. Pepper notes to finish. Less sophisticated than most of the Chinons tasted here – but perhaps that’s Bourgeuil for you.

Crafted from vines planted on south-facing clay and sandy soils, the 2022 Bourgueil Domaine du Bel Air les Vingt Lieux-dits evokes cassis, mulberries, spices, and liquorice aromas. Medium to full-bodied, layered, and supple, it’s mouth-coating and charming with a delicate, fruity core of fruit and powdery tannins. It concludes with a long, pure, and delicate finish. Destemmed and macerated for 30 days, it’s matured in demi-muids.

About this wine

Bourgueil

Bourgueil

Bourgueil is a qualitatively-important, dry red wine appellation in Touraine, if quantitatively small at 1,500 hectares. Located west of Tours, its vineyards are planted with Cabernet Franc on calcareous clay and sandy soils gently inclined towards the River Loire. The wines are medium to full-bodied, possessing rich, perfumed raspberry and forest-fruit characters underpinned by a fine structure.
