2022 Nuits-St Georges, Les Belles Croix, Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair, Burgundy

Description

This vineyard is in the southern part of Nuits, just below Les Pruliers. Thibault’s vines were planted in 1949. It is a fairly classical interpretation of Nuits, with spicy dark fruits and a chalky, peppery freshness. Thibault has succeeded in taming the tannins a little with some whole bunches.

Critics reviews

Allen Meadows 88-91/100

A slightly riper and more deeply pitched nose comprises notes of poached plum, black raspberry, and a suggestion of forest floor character. There is better density to the more powerful medium-bodied flavours that conclude in a mocha-inflected and mildly rustic finish.

50% whole bunch vinification. A dense purple, this stands up with a considerably powerful structure, perhaps not the same suavity all the way through, some strawberry notes, white pepper, medium length.

The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Belle Croix, which comes from deeper and clayey soils, has a bright bouquet with Morello cherries, raspberry jus and a touch of orange rind, with impressive depth and concentration. The medium-bodied palate has a fleshy veneer. It’s a little sweeter than the La Charmotte, with a grainy texture and a touch of Indian spice on the finish. Excellent.

Despite its alluring curranty fruit aromas and hints of earth and game, this wine may seem slightly rustic. Still, there is an encouraging richness on the palate and enough depth of flavour to suggest that with a bit of time, this should evolve into a classic Nuits-Saint-Georges. The fruit is sourced from a parcel of 0.70 hectares and fairly deep clay soils. Half of the grapes are fermented as whole clusters with a combination of punching down and pumping over before ageing in cask half new).

About this wine

Nuits-Saint-Georges

Nuits-Saint-Georges

One part of the village vineyards forms a strip south of the town of Nuits. More vineyards are on the steeper top slopes, often with a touch of the north in their otherwise eastern exposure. On the other side of Nuits is a wider swathe of village vineyard below the main slope that’s populated by the Premiers Crus, as well as a narrow band at the top of the slope where there is barely any topsoil.
