2022 Morey-St Denis, En la Rue de Vergy, Lignier-Michelot, Burgundy

Description

This is from a plot on an elevated vineyard, 300m above sea level and perched above the Clos de Tart Grand Cru vineyard. The topsoil is thin, hence the wines are more mineral and delicate. Lifted floral notes with blueberry and violet delight on the nose. The palate is soft and layered with tannins and fruit integrating seamlessly.

Cask sample.

From a beautifully placed lieu-dit, fine, fragrant and concentrated. Lovely village wine with real potential and worth the money.

The 2022 Morey-Saint-Denis En la Rue de Vergy includes 50% whole bunches this year. This cuvée lacked the precision I found in Lignier-Michelot's other wines, a bit of warmth detracting from its clarity. The palate is medium-bodied with black cherry and blueberry fruit. There’s fine structure, though I seek a little more roundness and fluidity on the finish. It’s just a tad abrupt.

From vines planted in the 1970s at the top of the slope above the Clos des Lambrays, Lignier's 2022 Morey-Saint-Denis En La Rue de Vergy offers up notes of cherries, red berries, licorice and rose petals. Medium to full-bodied, bright and mineral, it's a pure, refined wine whose ethereal style reflects its origins.

This is at once ripe yet cool and airy with its aromas of poached plum, black raspberry and violet hints. The supple, delicious and vibrant middle weight flavors possess both good detail and a prominent bead of minerality that adds a sense of lift to the lingering and youthfully austere finale. This could use better depth so a few years of cellaring should prove beneficial.

50% whole bunch, as there was not enough space in the tanks for more. This may not have developed much bouquet yet but is multilayered on the palate with dark berries, then some red fruit, an occasional chocolate note, a bit of white pepper and fine persistence. No marked acidity. Should be accessible soon and will be lovely.
