Description

François’s 0.7 hectares here are brilliantly situated. The soils are limestone and clay below a shallow rocky topsoil. On the nose, there’s a beautiful aroma of concentrated red and black cherries. This is well balanced with excellent freshness and a subtle chalkiness. The tannins are prominent, though velvety, and there is a red fruit core. There is serious potential here.

Neal Martin 90-92/100

The 2022 Volnay Les Taillepieds 1er Cru has a far superior nose to the 2021: raspberry, wild strawberry, oyster shell and marine elements coming through with time. Quite mercurial in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit. Fleshy and enveloping in the mouth, this is quintessential Volnay has a slight metallic note on the finish that should dissipate by the time of bottling.

Rich purple, with a touch of sulphur on the nose post racking, but then a swelling, exuberant ripe dark raspberry fruit, with enough acidity to stay fresh. The fine soft ripe mouthful returns behind, along with adequate acidity.
