2022 Corton-Charlemagne, Grand Cru, Camille Giroud, Burgundy

Description

From two parcels, one facing east towards Pernand, the other more southerly. The easterly element gives the wine its tropical notes, less in evidence in 2021 when that sector was more frost-affected. No such concern this year: this is vibrantly on song, with a penetrating minerality overlaid by lime blossom, acacia and lime-drizzled mango.

Critics reviews

Neal Martin 91-93/100

The 2022 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is far superior to the 2021. Well-defined on the nose, this has impressive focus and composure, lemon curd and nectarine mixed with light melted candle wax aromas. The well-balanced palate is taut and fresh, with a fine bead of acidity, quite sapid in the mouth with a finish that may deserve more complexity and personality. Still, this is a very decent, you might say "solid" Corton-Charlemagne.

Mid primrose in colour. A fine fresh chiselled stony nose. Quite tight, a little structure, not quite as much expected in the way of fruit through the middle. Very much white fruit to finish. Seems rather backward at the moment, a little hidden behind its wood. Revisit later.

About this wine

Corton-Charlemagne

Corton-Charlemagne

Two specific vineyards, En Charlemagne and Le Charlemagne, make up half of this appellation, while white grapes grown in seven others may also be sold as Corton-Charlemagne. As a result there can be a wide divergence in style between a south-facing location such as Pougets, which needs picking at the start of the harvest, and the western slopes in Pernand-Vergelesses which might be picked weeks later.
