2022 Chapelle d'Ausone, St Emilion, Bordeaux

Description

This has some of the discretion of the grand vin while being a bit easier to read at this early stage. The cool fruit notes are expressed through a cold coffee graininess. The wine is long and composed, even if unwaveringly standoffish. None of these comments should be taken negatively. Ausone’s wines are always the antithesis of show ponies; with time, compelling notes of intense, pure fruit, sauve tannins and crunchy minerality arrive. The difference for Chapelle is that these characteristics are shown with less intensity in a palate with a bit more echo.

Critics reviews

William Kelley 91-93/100
A blend of 60% Cabernet Franc, 35% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2022 Chapelle d'Ausone offers up aromas of cherries, raspberries and rose petals mingled with subtle hints of incense. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, it's taut and youthfully firm, concluding with a mineral finish.

An impressive Chapelle that opens with a wave of opulence, rich and confident in its construction. Majors on tobacco, cigar box, liquorice, chocolate, creamy damson, black cherry puree, velvety tannins. Incredible to think that this character can be teased out of pure limestone soils, but their fingerprint, with a welcome edge of salty cracker, comes in on the finish. Takes the character of the vintage and leans right in to it. Highly accomplished. 3.5ph, 100% new oak. Conversion to organic farming since 2020, Philippe Baillarguet cellar master, Pauline Vauthier owner and winemaker.

About this wine

Saint-Emilion

Saint-Emilion

First officially classified in 1954, St-Émilion is one of Bordeaux's largest winemaking appellations, producing more wine than Listrac, Moulis, St Estèphe, Pauillac, St Julien and Margaux combined. Many of the region's finest vineyards can be found atop the steep limestone slopes of the village itself, although a fledgling band of garagiste producers are eschewing terroir to make small-batch, deeply-concentrated wines from their homes.
