2022 Volnay, En Champans, 1er Cru, Domaine de Montille, Burgundy

Description

The relatively deep soil here helps in drier years, holding water to keep the vines going through drought. This was a particular benefit this year. There is a lovely intensity to the aromas, with tiny red berries jostling for attention with violets and rose petals. The palate is sweet, creamy and rounded, with a brisk acidity to the finish.

40% whole cluster. A middling purple colour. This has an engaging dense red berry fruit, with just slightly dry tannins at the end, after which the fruit returns. Medium long finish.

The 2022 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru, including one-third whole clusters, has a wonderful bouquet with red cherries and redcurrant scents, a touch of blue fruit emerging with aeration. Nicely integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, fresh and vibrant, and lively with a tensile, citrus finish. Recommended.
